English Learning Strategies of Students at Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University

English Learning Strategies of Students at Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University

             The purpose of this research was to explore strategies in learning English of Students at Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University. The subjects were 256 freshmen of Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University in the second semester of the academic year 2014. They were selected base on the purpose sampling technique. Moreover, they were divided into three ability groups: high, medium, and low by means of their grades. The Thai versions of Style Orientation Scale for Strategy Inventory of Language Learning Questionnaire (SILL) Oxford (1989) were administered to the sample groups. Oxford’s check-lists and explanations were used in analyzing and explaining the questionnaires’ results. Percentages were used for comparing the three groups. The results indicated that all of three groups of these students “always” to “usually” used the strategy of metacognitive. Cognitive strategies and compensation strategies were found that the high and medium ability groups from “always” to “usually” used these two strategies where as the low ability group “usually did not” to “almost never” used them.
