Botanical characteristics
The herbaceous plant has an underground trunk called a rhizome. The trunk is 50-100 cm tall. The rhizome is round and flat. True stems have a jointed appearance and the flesh is white or light yellow. An artificial tree the size of a pencil, covered with sheaths or leaf bases.
The leaves are a single leaf type. They emerge alternately in two rows. The leaf petioles are long and wrap around the trunk. The green leaves are lance-shaped and the leaf bases are slender and pointed, 2 cm wide and 20 cm long.
Flowers emerge in clusters from underground stems that shoot up from the rhizome. The peduncle is 20 cm long. Every flower has a reddish-green bract. and will show flowers later
The fruit has 3 lobes. Inside are many black seeds. The fruit is round, large, and hard. The rhizome when mature is very spicy. The flesh of ginger rhizomes is yellowish in color.
