The 15th day of the waxing moon of the eighth lunar month

This is the day the Buddha delivered the Dhamma he had realized for the first time; thus, it marks the beginning of the proclamation of Buddhism to the world. Furthermore, through His ability to expound, reveal, and clearly demonstrate the realized Dhamma to the world, He became the Supreme Teacher—the Fully Enlightened Buddha.

He fully accomplished the mission of a "Samma-sambuddha"—a Buddha capable of expounding his enlightenment so that others could realize it as well. This differs from a "Paccekabuddha" (Solitary Buddha), who, despite attaining enlightenment independently, is unable to teach or reveal that realization to others. For this reason, Asalha Puja Day is also known as "Dhamma Day."
