This research aimed to study the current situation of solid waste management in the community, to study the participation of solid waste management and to find the guideline for solid waste management in the Ban Mahaphot community, NaiWiang subdistrict, Mueang district, Nan Province in Thailand. The quantitative data was collected via questionnaires. The sample group was 267 people, one representative from each household (267 households) in the Ban Mahaphot community. Statistical analysis techniques used in this research were percentage, mean and standard deviation. The result shown that largest sample group was women over the age of 60 years, whose income was in the range of 10,001–15,000 baht/month. Most solid waste was separated for composting. For the knowledge of solid waste and solid waste segregation, the result shows the medium level of knowledge in solid waste and solid waste segregation. Attitudes toward solid waste management were generally unfavorable. The participation in solid waste management was higher in households in which the attitude was mostly positive. The most common household solid waste behavior was segregation of waste materials such as glass bottles and metal. The qualitative data was studied by a purposive sampling method to find the guidelines of solid waste management. The sampling group was 30 persons, which included members of the municipal council, community leaders, community committees, and community health volunteers. Appreciation Influence Control (A-I-C technique) was used in focused group meeting to brainstorm to consider the problems and current situation of solid waste in the community. The project of “household solid waste management at source” has launched in the community, which aimed to promote participation in solid waste segregation and to add value to solid waste. Members of the project must bring in waste materials worth at least 10 baht every month. In case of a death, members can receive compensate money of 2000 baht/person. Consequently, this project was accepted and proceeded in the community.
