In 1851, King Rama IV had important royal duties such as modifying the norms of civil servants who visit to wear shirts like western countries. His Highness made a contract of royal friendship and foreign affairs with western nations (The Bowring Treaty), and led Siam to escape from western colonization. He was interested in learning western languages and western academics such as science and astronomy until he was later able to predict the occurrence of a solar eclipse at Wa Kor Subdistrict, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province precisely. Because of this, he was called "Father of Thai Science". He had owned the throne for 18 years, and died on 1 October, 1868.
Therefore, 1 October of every year is the State Day of the Commemorative Ceremony of His Majesty King Mongkut without regard to public holiday by the Cabinet resolution on 21 December, 2010. It was approved to designate 18 October of every year, which coincides with the birthday of His Majesty King Mongkut, as "King Mongkut's Day" and to be a state ceremony which is not a public holiday.
